I guess I turned to the dark side…

Goin’ Conferencing…

Since the semester began back in August, a lot of my goals have fallen by the wayside and a lot of new ones have been set. Where I used to be excited about doing a thesis and getting a PH.D, I’m now pumped for finding a job (whether in radio or otherwise) and setting out in life. Luckily, I was able to hold on to a handful of my goals and have, so far, accomplished one of them. Last night I found out that my submission to the 2011 Sooner Communication Conference and will be presenting coming up in March.

It used to be, back when I was in my early undergrad phase, that when you were told about conferences, they usually sounded dull. Little did I know how wrong that assumption was, in fact, going to a conference after I finished my undergrad was one of the better decisions I have ever made. Not only was I given the opportunity to network in the communication field and meet other scholars, there was a pub crawl. That’s right, traveling from bar to bar with a dozen scholars in my field that produced a lot of the work I read in my courses. To top it all off, I was able to meet Dr. Em Griffin, author of my communication theory text book from my last semester.

While I know that, due to my institution and delegation size, things won’t exactly be the same for this go-around, I plan on still having a blast and enjoying one of the last times I will be immersing myself in the communication field of academia. Plus, ya know, it’s always good to take these opportunities to network and meet new people.
