Week Late Movie Reviews: Green Lantern

leave a comment »

This one is kind of a big deal. In the world of super heroes, Green Lantern is tops for me. Was this a perfect movie? No, it really wasn’t. Was it a movie that I enjoyed a great deal? Yeah, it really was. I’ll explain in more detail after the jump.

Week Late Movie Reviews: X-Men: First Class

leave a comment »

Little bit late one this one, but here we go. Hollywood is doing a good job of surprising me so far this year. First it was Hangover Part 2 that surprised me after being less than impressive in the commercial and trailer market, now it’s time for Marvel’s mutants to leave me amazed. The movie wasn’t without it’s flaws, but it was a strong re-entry into the world of the X-Men…something that was sorely needed after the cinematic abortion that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Week Late Movie Reviews…The Hangover Part 2

I still remember the first time I saw The Hangover, I had seen a few commercials for it but wasn’t sure what to think of it. So I got my brother and we went to go see what I was sure was going to be a forgettable comedy, boy was I wrong. By the end of the epically hilarious credits, I was pleasantly surprised at how funny this movie actually was. Bradley Cooper was playing a great straight man to Zack Galifiankis’ insane Alan, Ed Helms was equally hilarious, and the movie put together a great, new, comedy trio. I liked The Hangover enough that it was put in the same class as movies like Old School, Anchorman, Animal House and the rest, movies that were so funny they didn’t need a sequel because there was no way it could do justice. Then I heard about The Hangover Part 2… Read the rest of this entry »

Week Late Movie Reviews: Thor

The Avengers movie project, courtesy of Marvel, is something that a lot of people are excited about. The idea of seeing Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and the rest on screen together is a nerd’s dream. Throw in that the movie will have a cast featuring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and many more, and is being directed by Nerd-King Joss Whedon, then you have what could be considered the comic movie event of 2012. So far, we have seen the fantastic Iron Man, the much better than prior attempts Incredible Hulk and the good but not great Iron Man 2; Captain America comes to theaters in July, but just over a week ago we were treated to Thor. How did it hold up? Read the rest of this entry »

Summer Movie Season Started Today?

with 2 comments

In the midst of my spring break doldrums, I ventured out to see a new movie released today. It’s a flick called Battle: Los Angeles and is the story of a Marine (played by Aaron Eckart, Two-Face in The Dark Knight) and an alien invasion.

As I sat in the theater, one major thing stood out to me above all: visually speaking, this movie is awesome. It looked fantastic and I can’t wait to try it out on blu-ray with surround sound and the works. Beyond that, it’s a fairly generic film. The dialogue and characters were full of the usual military flair, you have the grizzled veteran on his way out (played by Eckart), the recently promoted lieutenant that is in over his head (played by Ramon Rodriguez, who I hardly recognized from Transformers 2) and the soldier who lost a brother from the veteran’s former unit. Pairing this with cliche’ dialogue is, usually, a recipe for disaster, but it works here. This is probably because I was so focused on the visuals throughout the movie, and they are a whole lot of fun.

It’s strange to me to sit in a movie theater in March while watching what I would normally consider a Summer popcorn flick, but, when I look at what is coming up, I can see how this was an ideal choice for release. When released right now in March, it doesn’t have much in the way of nerdy competition. If it had been released in May, June, or July, it has to take on Thor, Captain America, Harry Potter’s finale, and the sketch new X-Men outing.

Normally, I would give this one a 3/5, but, since it is actually an original film and not an adaptation, reboot, or remake, it gets an additional point and rates out at 4/5. Plus, the historical basis for this movie rocks if you are a WWII nerd like I am. If you have time, look it up and enjoy the weirdness/UFO cover up.

Because it appears that many of the movies I want to see are coming out soon, I’m going to put together a Spring/Summer movie blowout coming soon…until then, here is the trailer for Battle: Los Angeles:
