Week Late Movie Reviews: Thor

The Avengers movie project, courtesy of Marvel, is something that a lot of people are excited about. The idea of seeing Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and the rest on screen together is a nerd’s dream. Throw in that the movie will have a cast featuring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and many more, and is being directed by Nerd-King Joss Whedon, then you have what could be considered the comic movie event of 2012. So far, we have seen the fantastic Iron Man, the much better than prior attempts Incredible Hulk and the good but not great Iron Man 2; Captain America comes to theaters in July, but just over a week ago we were treated to Thor. How did it hold up? Read the rest of this entry »

About Last Night…

In case you haven’t heard, Osama Bin Laden is dead. Kind of a big deal if you live in America, at least certainly more so than the royal wedding. Similar to when the terrible 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and all of America, I feel like this is an event that we will all remember where we were. Disappointed…

I hoped that news of Bin Laden’s death would transcend the petty bickering of our current political landscape. Instead of right and left, I hoped that we would be united, in light of this historic moment, and celebrate as one America. As I look at the statuses and comments posted on Facebook and Twitter tonight, I see that I may have been hoping for too much. Way to go, America.

It Has Come To This…Politics

leave a comment »

So it has come to this, America? Unemployment is at 19%, congress cannot get anything done, and for another year there is an outgoing college class about to enter the workforce to find that all of the promises made to them about going to college and getting a job were broken; and this is what is going on? If you’re looking for partisan crap, this is definitely not the place to go. There is plenty of blame to go around this time…

I woke up to see a new trailer for another one of the many, many movies I am looking forward to this summer. While most of you have heard about Thor, Captain America, Harry Potter, X-Men First Class and all fo the rest, here is one that you may not have heard about…Cowboys and Aliens.

Directed by Joh Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, sadly not Iron Man 3) and starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde, Cowboys and Aliens looks to be a highly visual, sci-fi summer romp. The IMDB page sums it up best, “A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way.” Given that I enjoy sci-fi and western films, this should be one that can’t miss. If you enjoy sci-fi and westerns as well, you should probably check it out this summer. If you dig westerns but maybe not sci-fi, then you may want to pass. Either way, this should be a kick ass summer flick

And Now For Something Completely Different…

First off, let me say that it has been a rough week.

I’m a nerd, simple as that. While most people are comic nerds, video game nerds, movie nerds, book nerds, and so many other different kinds of nerds, I am different. I consider myself a multi-faceted nerd. I’m into a lot of things, and I know a lot about a lot of different things. That is why, when I saw this video, it immediately brightened my day and, effectively, my week. I hold a soft spot for my childhood, specifically the dorky things I was interested in during said childhood. Thats is why, when i saw this mash-up of Transformers and Michael Jackson, I couldn’t just watch it once. Enjoy.

It’s The Second Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

leave a comment »

That’s right, everyone, today was Opening Day 2011! Now that I am back from the game, I can reminisce about how awesome it felt to FINALLY be back at the K. I don’t know what it is, the smell of the grass, the endless supply of brats, hot dogs, peanuts, frosty malts, and everything else you can eat, or, simply, the baseball that makes today so fantastic. Whether it’s a blistering 90 degrees out or a shockingly cold 40 degrees, it doesn’t matter because baseball is back! It may not be America’s pastime anymore, but it’s still one of the single greatest experiences a person can have.

I still remember going to ballgames for my birthday, every year, when I was a kid. Late summer at Kauffman Stadium with my dad, rarely seeing a win, it was still the most fun I could have had. Even in later years, going to Opening Day with my work folks, having an awesome tailgate, and then still seeing a loss. It really doesn’t get much better than that.

I’ve made it my goal this year to go to as many games as I can, whether it’s Royals games at the K, Springfield Cardinals games (ideally when they play the Naturals), or wherever I end up. If I’ve learned anything, it’s this: Life is too short to waste away in school, or at work. But, life is never too short to blow off a day at either of those places and head to a ballgame.
